share: the romeo award

the romeo award honors those who use their lives to make a difference in the lives of others.

it is our sincere pleasure to gift our first romeo award to the joyful heart foundations fall 2006 retreat participants. the staff at joyful heart graciously facilitated events designed to heal the minds, bodies and spirits of sexual assault victims.

it was a long journey that began on a friday evening and ended late sunday. the space was a 2 room gallery, the air consistently perfectly perfumed and warmly lit. upon arrival victims were relieved to have abandoned daily responsibilities for a weekend, eager to learn new life skills and a little nervous about what to expect. the concept and rules were explained. the goal was to become less stressed and learn new ideas that could improve the victims chaotic lives, hopefully leaving wiser and lighter. promises were made by the staff that the environment is judgement free, speak freely, come and go as needed and take advantage of as many or as little of the services offered. it was an ideal setting for a wonderful opportunity to be human, completely safe.

the group was the most courageous i have ever met. furiously disagreeing with sexual assault in our society demonstrated a determination to ensure the safety of others. they are our soldiers armed with loving hearts. the strength of their character was enlightening, mature, beautiful, warm and sincere, they glowed.

their voices, words, photographs, poems and the like will certainly transform many.

we offer our most sincere applause to you.
